October 2 , 2008 - Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and once again we are reminded how often we hear about one of our friends or family members having breast cancer. This newsletter is dedicated to my courageous friends Marie, Karen, Rose, Paula, and my sister-in-law Lois, as well as the strong women in your life. My mother-in-law, Sylvia, was also a survivor. Diagnosed at 78, she beat breast cancer and lived a full life to 93.

This month our free download is a card and envelope with the theme "It’s Time for a Cure". This design uses the pink ribbon to symbolize the hands of the clock and is surrounded by 12 roses. We encourage you to print these cards and envelopes out and send them to your friends to remind them to get their check-ups or wish them well. Prevention and awareness are our best defenses!

We also designed a free downloadable "Awareness" patterned design. You can print and use the design for making scrapbook pages, wrapping paper, or print on fabric sheets.

Make an Anti-Ouch Pouch!

ScrapSMART.com has joined a 2008-community service partnership with the American Sewing Guild (ASG). This year's project is the Anti-Ouch Pouch that will be distributed to various breast cancer care facilities.

This soft pillow is designed to be worn snugly against the underarm area to cushion the area after breast surgery or during radiation treatment. The wedge-shaped pouch gently holds the arm away from the body when the user is standing. The strap holds the pillow in place without having to use sore arm muscles to "clutch" it. The strap is adjustable and the fiberfill may be adjusted via the overlapped opening.

The quick and easy directions are free to anyone who wishes to sew Anti-Ouch Pouches for charitable causes. The directions for making these pouches are found in the "Giving Back" section of www.asg.org. These directions may be copied and distributed for non-profit use only. If you plan to make the Anti-Ouch Pouch as a community service project for a local hospital/breast care center, it's best to seek their approval before proceeding with the project.

ScrapSMART.com helps add the finishing touch to these projects by providing a free downloadable fabric label to personalize each lovingly sewn Anti-Ouch Pouch. Knowing where these gifts come from allows the recipient to connect through friendship and caring. These labels are found in the ASG Section on the ScrapSMART.com home page.

American Sewing Guild (www.asg.org) is a national non-profit organization of more than 20,000 members dedicated to advancing sewing as an art and life skill. ASG has over 135 chapters with nearly 1,000 Neighborhood Groups in communities throughout the United States. ASG welcomes members of all skill levels and from many different walks of life to join them in learning new skills, networking with others who share an interest in sewing, and having the opportunity to contribute to community service sewing projects.
